Emotional regulation is a skill that needs to be learned and is not an innate ability. We often respond negatively in situations when we are already IN a negative state of mind. Most likely we have quickly jumped into our ego mind to connect with whatever perception or interpretation matches the negative feelings. Perhaps we have created some false assumptions, think about the situation and expand the negativity or remind ourselves of other similar bad experiences. We have all heard the question, “do you tend to look at the glass half full or empty?” Or you can recall a time when someone says “think before you react.” But it’s at times easier said than done.
